Toyota will invest $383 million across four of its U.S. manufacturing plants in Alabama, Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee. The investment will go toward expanding or creating four-cylinder engine production lines with options for hybrid vehicles.
Of the four plants, Toyota’s base in Huntsville, Alabama, will get the biggest share of the investment at $222 million. The facility will be expanded by 114,000 square feet to make room for a new production line, marking the sixth time that Toyota expands the plant since its opening in 2003.
The Missouri location gets the next $109 million to increase its annual capacity to build engine cylinder heads to three million. The Tennessee and Kentucky plants get the rest, a relatively small sum, but Kentucky is the company’s largest vehicle manufacturing plant in the world and has already recently received a major $461-million investment.
“Toyota customers want vehicles that are fuel-efficient and electrified,” said Norm Bafunno, senior vice president, Unit Manufacturing and Engineering, Toyota. “These investments allow us to meet customer needs and quickly respond to an evolving market. We are committed to investing in the U.S., and our teams are ready to take on this new challenge.”
